A Guide to Buying Refurbished Electronics (by DZ)

The word “refurbished” can be scary. You never know if someone truly refurbished an item, or if they just cleaned up a used item. Some electronics can be very expensive, and you want to make sure that you are getting quality for your money. I have purchased many refurbished items, and have even sold some.

My all time favorite electronics website is Newegg.com. I have always had pleasant transactions with them. They also have a steady cycle of refurbished items coming in and out. They make the specifications, user reviews, and pictures all very easy to find. Most importantly, they ask a fair price for their items. From Tv’s to PC’s this is a great place to go. They even have a phone service to assist you in any orders.

Second up is Amazon.com. This is one of the largest and trusted online shopping websites. Their most attractive selling point is that they have multiple sellers to choose from. Amazon’s pricing is very hard to beat. They sell a large variety of items at competitive prices. They are the largest of the retailers in my review, and they sell more than just electronics.

Another favorite of mine is Ebay.com. This website is hard to write a review on. They offer a lot of electronics from a lot of different anonymous sellers. This is the riskiest, but also most rewarding, of the websites I am reviewing. Ebay offers person to person selling. It reminds me of a giant online garage sale. When buying from ebay the first thing to check is the sellers reviews. You can see a review for every item that the person has sold and bought. You want the review to say 100% positive feedback, or as close to that as you can get. You also want to pay attention to the item itself. Does it say seller refurbished, factory refurbished, or just plain old used. Read the description of the item carefully, and then read it again. Next look at the location of the item. Generally stay away from any items not sold by people in your country, as communication and shipping times can be hard to deal with. With all of these complications you might be wondering if Ebay is worth the hassle. I assure you it is. I have saved lots of money by purchasing electronics off of ebay. Watch multiple items, and search for multiple days. If you take the time to find a bargain, it can save you a lot of money.

BestBuy.com is a large USA retailer. They offer quality guarantee, and that in itself is worth something. They always seem to charge top dollar for items, which is a downside. On the flip side of things though, they offer the best customer care, and quality of items. I have managed to find a couple steals from Best Buy, but most of the time they are my last stop. Another positive, is that they offer a store front to shop at.

I would recommend staying away from smaller internet stores. You want you’re wallet to be safe, and you’re items to be quality. I would recommend any of these four places for buying refurbished electronics.
