Company of Heroes (Review)

A next gen Real Time Strategy game.

Company of Heroes may be the best RTS I have ever played. It really brings a level of detail that I haven’t seen before, to the RTS genre. Set during WWII, you start as the United States, and battle Nazis all across Europe. With a well fleshed out campaign, and plenty of bonus content, COH will provide hours upon hours of fun.

The core game is the campaign story, but my favorite part is the multiplayer. Team up with friends to battle Nazis across dozens of maps, or even join the enemy and fight your friends. The expansion packs to the game allow you to play as the British, and also add a 2nd Nazi team. As you build your base, you can create troops and tanks to help you gain control over the map. There are plenty of vehicle and troop options to allow for personal strategy to play a major role. Furthermore, each map is divided into territory sectors. As you send troops across the map you can capture territory by taking control points which grant resources and unit population cap. You win by wiping out the enemy.

The cover mechanic and system sets Company of Heroes apart.

One of the things that really set this game apart, are the unit cover tactics. You can direct units to take cover behind fences, hills, ditches, and debris. You can tell your troops to hide in buildings, and you can alter their aggressiveness. The detail that each troop in a squad provides is incredible. Each troop has his own life and AI movement. I have yet to meet a RTS fan who does not enjoy this game.

From air strikes to blitzkriegs, this game really brings to life one of the most famous wars in history. I recommend it to any RTS lovers out there, and even to players who have never played an RTS.
