Detective Pikachu is the first ever live action Pokemon Movie.
As a long time Pokemon fan, I was very excited to go see this film. My siblings and I went to see it together, and I’m happy to say that everyone enjoyed it. Detective Pikachu was definitely worth the watch, and even worth catching on the big screen.
The movie Detective Pikachu was based off the video game Detective Pikachu. The main character Tom Goodman was played by Justice Smith, and Detective Pikachu himself was voiced by Ryan Reynolds. The two characters meet early on in the film and team up to find Tim’s missing father.
It’s not a Pokemon Story, it’s a story set in the Pokemon Universe.
Movies that are based off books or video games tend to get unfairly criticized. Detective Pikachu though is doing very well in theaters and is being positively received across the internet.
Seeing Pokemon come to life in a live action film was very cool. I really liked that the whole movie felt more like a story in the Pokemon universe, instead of a Pokemon story. What I mean by that, is that Tim Goodman starts out as an insurance adjuster. He is not a Pokemon trainer and has no desire to be one. He’s just a regular guy hanging with his regular friend Jack (who is played by Karan Soni). Although the movie contains Pokemon fight scenes, they are brief and are not the focus of the film. Catching and battling Pokemon do not play major roles in the movie. The story is about a son looking for his missing father.
Realistic Pokemon on the big screen.
With that said, there are definitely a lot of Pokemon in this movie. Some of the more recognizable ones are Charizard, Mr. Mime, Gyarados, Magikarp, JigglyPuff and Psyduck. You may not know this interesting tidbit, but the artist who was responsible for the concept drawings landed the job for this movie based off work that he’d done over 6 years ago. RJ Palmer was well known for his realistic Pokemon drawings and was later contacted to help film makers bring his drawings to life on the big screen.
Overall, I really enjoyed Detective Pikachu. I am looking forward to watching it again and eventually owning it. Be sure to catch Detective Pikachu in theaters!
