Pick a starting location that matches your play-style.
Choosing the right spot to drop could mean the difference between a 10 second match and a victory. Fortnite Battle Royale offers dozens of unique locations for players to drop in at, so do a little recon before jumping from that bus.
If your play style is fast paced shoot-em-up then you may do well dropping into a heavily populated area like a town, factory or even Loot Lake. But if you need more time to get acclimated to your environment, then you should stick to the outskirts of the map, or to a dense wooded areas like Waling Woods.
More players choose to go for named locations, instead of spawning in the mountains. So try a few starting locations out and see which ones you tend to do best in. One last thing to mention about starting locations for Fortnite, is that they are constantly being updated. The differences between Season 1 and Season 6 are many, so keep an eye on those patch notes.
Nail the Landing
Choosing when to open your glider can mean the difference between getting that chest, or getting the barrel end of the shotgun in your chest. Know how your glider works in Fortnite. For instance, your glider will open faster if you are over a mountain, because the ground is high. So if you are not interested in a long drawn out glide, then consider steering clear of mountain ranges.
Opening your glider early has advantages and disadvantages. An early open will give you a great view of the battlefield, but it will also reveal your position. Find out what works best for you and practice your strategy. You’ll be nailing that landing in no time.
Know Your Weapons and Items
You may already be familiar with the rarity and power level of weapons in Fortnite, but just in case, here is a color coded breakdown.
- Common – Grey
- Uncommon – Green
- Rare – Blue
- Epic – Purple
- Legendary – Gold
Having legendary weapons is not enough to make you a legendary player though. You still need to know how to use your weapons. Practice makes perfect in any game, so practice on the weapons that you want to get good at. If you find that sniping really isn’t your thing, or that it doesn’t match your play-style, then try out a shotgun. Different weapons have different ranges and capabilities, and so do players.
Being familiar with the many different item types will go a long way toward helping you win as well. There are a variety of traps and healing items that can give you a competitive edge, so don’t use up all your bar space on purple shotguns.
Be aware of your surrounding and the map.
Just like in any competitive eSport, be sure to watch that map. Know when it’s time to move and when it’s time to hang tight. Also be sure to keep your head up. The last thing you want is to be shot in the back while crafting a beautiful wooden wall.
Some players like to get ahead of the game and go to the map center early, while other players like to ride the storm edges. So figure out what works for you and practice practice practice.
Use the high-ground. It worked for Obi-wan.
Sniping isn’t the only reason to use the high ground. Getting a birds-eye view can reveal enemy locations, loot chests and much more. Don’t be afraid to poke your head out there once in a while. After all, there’s only a 50% chance it’ll get blown off.
Know when to hunker down and set traps.
Even the best Fortnite players hold up in a house from time to time. Knowing when to fortify a house with traps, or how to bait another player into a room containing a loot chest are both valuable skills. Outsmarting other players will greatly increase your chance at victory.
You may be the “fastest knobs in the west” but there is always a chance for another player to get lucky. That lucky stray bullet could cost you the victory. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that hiding wins games, but it definitely has its uses.
Just keep in mind that every engagement you make or partake in can result in your match being over. So choose your engagements wisely.
Be creative when covering your tracks and hiding your location.
There are several ways to cover your tracks in Fortnite. You can remember to close doors, put down toilet seats and take out the trash. But seriously, closing doors is not a bad idea.
Another thing you can do, that many players fail to realize, is to leave trees with 1 attack left. Don’t kill the tree completely, because it can give your position away. It’s also worth noting that crouching and sprinting hides your cloud a bit more than all out sprinting, so decide how much of a need for speed you really have.
Practice makes perfect… sort of.
