Eight Women to do the job of Eleven Men.
Ocean’s Eight is a new take on the traditional Ocean’s films. Danny Ocean is assumed dead or missing, and his sister Debbie Ocean is now the central character. The movie follows Debbie as she assembles a crew of 7 other women to pull off a heist at New York City’s annual Met Gala.
As my wife and I watched Ocean’s Eight, I heard her laughing more than myself. As I am not female, I assume that this film has some humor that went over my head. It definitely felt like a movie aimed at women. Despite missing some of the humor though, I did enjoy the movie.
A quick internet search shows that Ocean’s Eight did not perform as well as one would hope, but I think that it did just fine. It’s hard to spin an established film series in a new direction, while not maintaining any of the original characters.
More time spent on the heist than in other Ocean movies.
I feel like this movie spent significantly more time on the actual heist than prior Ocean movies. The original Ocean’s Eleven spent a lot of time on character development and planning. Ocean’s Eight seemed to spend a good bit more time on the actual heist, which made for a faster paced film. I think that this was a difficult but good choice.
On one hand, they could have tried to make it more like the originals, but then it may not have resonated with younger more modern audiences. Either way, the film is what it is.
