The Orville – Season 1 Review

The Orville boldly goes where no show has gone before!

Okay, so that’s not totally true. The Orville is a blatant comedic rip-off of Star Trek. The show was created by Seth MacFarlane, who also plays the role of Captain Ed Mercer. The Orville is a Sci-Fi Comedy Action TV show. It first aired on FOX and is now available on Hulu. The second season is ongoing at the time of this review being written.

The pilot episode of The Orville begins with the main character Ed Mercer coming home to find his wife cheating on him with a blue alien. It then skips forward about a year where he is then chosen to captain a mid-level exploratory spaceship called “The Orville”. Ed chooses his best friend to pilot the vessel and then proceeds to meet the rest of his crew. Every character of the crew is funny in their own right. The show never lets up with its slapstick humor, ironic moments and blatant disregard for ripping off Star Trek.

From the opening sequence of each show, to the uniforms, and even the terminology used, The Orville repeatedly makes fun of other Sci-Fi franchises. The show might remind you of Futurama, Family Guy and other popular comedies. This is due to the fact that some of the writers from these TV shows actually had a hand in writing episodes of The Orville. Seth MacFarlane has also appeared in 2 episodes of Star Trek Enterprise, and has voiced characters in Futurama and Family Guy.

Season 1 of The Orville was a huge hit!

The Orville received and still is receiving positive feedback across the internet. Folks have quickly fallen in love with this hilarious new Sci-Fi Comedy. The first episode introduces the crew and the ship. The second episode begins to flesh out some of the secondary characters, and quickly starts tackling popular world issues with a sense of humor. The entire first season of The Orville is worth watching.

If you are looking for a good laugh, then The Orville is for you. As I await more episodes of Season 2, I am currently re-watching Season 1. The show is even funnier to watch the second time around. I am enjoying being reminded of where the main characters started on their journey.

It goes without saying that I highly recommend this show to anyone looking for a good laugh. Stay tuned for my review of The Orville: Season 2!
