Tomb Raider is a fast paced action adventure!

Lara Croft is the independent daughter of a wealthy adventurer. When she discovers a note left behind by her father she sets sail to find out what became of him. Her quest takes her to a hidden island where she encounters a group of radicals called Trinity. Trinity is on a quest to unearth an ancient mystery in hopes of weaponizing its unknown powers.

A new spin on an old franchise.

This movie is heavily inspired by the 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider video game series. Lara Croft is portrayed as a college student who is struggling to pay her bills. She does not want to lean on her families money, but instead chooses to carve her own path. This changes when she discovers new clues to her father’s whereabouts, and she sets out on an adventure to find him.

This new Tomb Raider is very different from the original films. Where the older films feel more like a fantasy adventure, this new movie feels more grounded. Lara Croft is more relateable, more human, and less confident. She makes mistakes, gets injured, and barely escapes with her life on multiple occasions.

A new Lara Croft for a new generation.

Lara Croft and the movie as a whole feel more modernized than previous iterations. Aside from a crazy plane wreck waterfall sequence the movie feels rather believable. The characters, both good and bad, do not buy into in the superstitious stories surrounding the ancient tomb they are exploring. The villain even tries to make peace with the protagonists stating that they can all just walk away together.

This movie is most definitely an origin story for Lara Croft. We get to see her life prior to becoming the fearless tomb raiding adventure that we are familiar with.

This movie had the odds stacked against it, just due to it being based off a video game. But the writers, director, and actors were able to pull it off and make a movie that can stand on its own two feet. Tomb Raider is well worth the watch, and even worth adding to the home collection.
