Movie Review of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is based on the world of Dungeons and Dragons, and contains a bunch of easter eggs and inside jokes for long-time fans. The main story arc follows Edgin, played by Chris Pine, who is a charming thief joined by a band of unlikely adventurers that embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic.

What is Dungeons & Dragons?

“Dungeons & Dragons (commonly abbreviated as D&D or DnD) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). It has been published by Wizards of the Coast (now a subsidiary of Hasbro) since 1997. The game was derived from miniature wargames, with a variation of the 1971 game Chainmail serving as the initial rule system. D&D’s publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry, and also deeply influenced video games, especially the role-playing video game genre.” – Wikipeida

Story Review of the Dungeons & Dragons Movie

Edgin assembles a team to find a magical relic that can bring his deceased wife back to life, but his pursuit of the relic costs him nearly everything else that he holds dear. Throughout the film, he learns that he is selfish, irresponsible, and has had family all along.

A Talented Cast of Characters

Dungeons and Dragons had a fantastic cast of characters. Chris Pines is joined by actors Michelle Rodriguez from Fast and the Furious, Justice Smith from Detective Pikachu, Regé-Jean Page from Bridgerton Season 1, as well as many other talented and well-known actors.

Dungeons and Dragons is an epic 2 hour long adventure

The movie defintely felt like it 2 hours and 14 minutes long. Normally this would be a bad thing, but in this case it was alright. The movie had enough humor, action, and story to justify the length. I ended up watching it in 2 parts over the course of 2 evenings, but I very much enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. I would recomend it as a fun film to watch, but I am not sure that I will watch it a second time.

Overall thoughts on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Movie Review

The movie had action, magic, sword fighting, dragons, dungeons, story, and a fair share of comedy mixed in. It felt like it had a lot of thought and love put into the making.

Justice Smith played a novice sorcery, and was a joy to watch. I really liked him in Detective Pikachu a few years back, and it was cool to see him on screen again. Rege Jean Page had some epic action sequences where he got to play a bad ass swordsman. Hugh Grant did his thing, and Michele Rodriguez was the perfect partner to Chris Pine.

The movie was almost non-stop action. It had a few moments where the characters got to rest and explore each others back storys, but the film kept up a fast pace. I feel like it could have been done in less time, but these days it seems like movies have become a loger experience. Either way, I enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons and felt it was well worth the watch.
