Game Summary:
No Man’s Sky was one of the most anticipated games of the year 2016. People were dying to get their hands on it. One guy even paid thousands of dollars to get it early. This SciFi exploration and survival game promised to deliver an experience like no other.
Using procedural generation, this game creates millions of planets to discover. Players are spawned at the edge of the galaxy and are guided toward its center. As players pilot their space ships between planets, they can discover and upload countless new species. Every discovery from planets to plants can be named by players. There are dozens unique species to meet, and languages to learn.
The player’s ship, suit, and tool can all be upgraded. There are space stations to trade resources at, and all kinds of NPC units flying around space. The universe is unusually large.
My Thoughts:
The game seemed rather overwhelming when I first began my space adventure. This overwhelming sensation quickly dissipated though, and was replaced with an underwhelming one. There really isn’t much to do in No Man’s Sky. You can mine rocks, upgrade your equipment, and upload discoveries. Once you’ve done this, you can fly to another planet and do it again.
It was announced that base building, and more crafting, will soon be added to the game. Perhaps this will help with things to do, at least until you’ve built a few bases. There is also the problem of players be too far away from each other. Most survival and exploration games are best enjoyed with friends.
I did not enjoy No Man’s Sky nearly as much as I thought I would. I feel that it’s a fine game. The real problem I see is the price of the game. It is being sold for $59.99, yet it has less content than most $20 games. I have half a dozen survival games that I would recommend, but this would not be one of them.
I know that I am being a bit tougher than usual in this review, but I want people to know what their getting into. I feel that the game did not properly advertise itself. It didn’t explain what is was about, but instead allowed for the media to run wild with expectations.
I bear no ill will toward No Man’s Sky. I hope that the game does well, and that they continue to add new content. I had fun, I just feel that the game is over priced.
