Sonic the Hedgehog – Movie Review

Sonic the Hedgehog on a live action adventure!

After escaping his home world, Sonic finds himself in a small town where he befriends a police officer named Tom. It isn’t long before Sonic’s super speed causes trouble, and he is discovered by the United States government. When Tom accidentally tranquilizes Sonic, stopping him from escaping, he feels responsible and offers to help Sonic travel to San Francisco to find his lost teleportation rings. The two friends set out on a funny and action packed adventure.

A comedic trio with a stellar performance!

Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik) & James Marsden (Tom) all gave fantastic performances. Sonic the Hedgehog was packed full of funny moments. The movie was fast paced (no pun intended) and had a solid story arc. You don’t need to be a Sonic or SEGA fan to enjoy this film, but if you are, there are tons of little Easter eggs packed in for you to catch.

Sonic the Hedgehog is based off the popular SEGA game franchise released in the early 90’s. The story itself bares no resemblance, but the character of Sonic is true to his original look and personality. This was not always the case though, as Sonic himself underwent a major aesthetic rework after the initial movie trailer release received negative feedback. It looks as though the studio’s hard work and money paid off, as Sonic the Hedgehog has been well received both critically and across the internet.

The idea of putting a cartoon video game character into a live action movie reminds me of Detective Pikachu, and if you enjoyed that movie, then you will probably enjoy this one as well. Sonic the Hedgehog is a little more mainstream and down to earth than Detective Pikachu, but it feels very much the same. I definitely recommend giving this one a watch, and even buying it to enjoy over and over again. Sonic the Hedgehog is family friendly and funny for all ages.
