Summary & Thoughts:
The newest voxel world created by Trion Worlds features diverse worlds and vast landscapes. No doubt owing much of it’s success to the ever wonderful Minecraft, this game tries hard to set itself apart. With the addition of many MMO elements, Trove allows players to choose a class, craft weapons, loot gear, and adventure with friends into dangerous dungeons. A HUB world allows players to meet up with each other. Mysterious portals allow players to jump into level appropriate content, with the option to teleport back at a whim.
Trove is free to play and has several kinds of microtransactions. There are no fewer than 11 classes to choose from at the start of the game. Each class is truly unique, but I found some of them to be more boring and repetitive. The Candy Barbarian lacked luster, but I enjoyed the Dracolyte who can turn into a fire-breathing dragon as his ultimate. Despite being a little repetitive at times, Trove still has better combat than most voxel games.
There are a large number of items to craft, and everyone gets their own portable plot of land to build on. So unlike Minecraft, you cannot just build anywhere. You can build an extravagant house reaching to the sky and move it between worlds easily. Almost every block in the world is removable, and there is a good assortment of enemies to fight.
Now I don’t see myself playing this game every day, but it’s something I will definitely venture into occasionally. Trove is free to play and has been gaining momentum on Steam and gaming consoles. I recommend giving it a try next time you’re looking for something simple and relaxing.
